As both National Apprenticeship Week and National Butchers’ Week begin, one of Ludlow Food Centre’s butchery apprentices has a special reason to celebrate.

Jess Pugh, who started work as a butchery counter assistant in 2008, decided to take the leap and join the business’ apprenticeship scheme shortly afterwards, and is about to embark on the next stage of her career by beginning her NVQ Level 3 qualification.

Jess, now 22, said: “After I completed my A-Levels, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do. But I knew that when I started working at Ludlow Food Centre, it was where I wanted to build my career.

“Other members of the team have been trained as apprentices, and have even gone on to achieve wider recognition from the industry in national competitions.

"After a few months here, I realised that I wanted to do the same – and so got involved in the scheme. I work as part of an incredible award-winning team and am constantly learning.

"I am really excited to be completing the next part of my training, which will give me the edge in an industry with plenty of young talent.”

Ludlow Food Centre Butchery Manager, John Brereton, has trained five apprentices through Ludlow Food Centre, including Andrew Brassington, who was crowned Britain’s Best Young Butcher 2012 at the prestigious Meat Management Awards.

John added: “Jess is massively dedicated and is a real asset to the Ludlow Food Centre butchery department. Her skill and passion is second to none and we’re proud to have trained her to her current level since first joining us as a counter assistant. I’m sure she will go on to become a real star of the industry.”

Jess begins her NVQ Level 3 on March 14th – the first day of both National Apprenticeship Week and National Butchers’ Week 2016 – her training continues for 12 months.
