Ludlow Food Centre's Butchery Manager, John Brereton, has been awarded a Silver medal in the WorldSkills UK National Competition. Held at Birmingham's NEC, on Saturday 21st November, John competed in the finals as one of six top scoring butchers from Wales, England and Northern Ireland.

WorldSkills is recognised globally for the valuable work it does to promote the benefits of and need for skilled workers across multiple professions.

At the NEC, 55 competitions took place over three days, as part of The Skills Show – the UK’s largest careers event. John and the other butchery competitors were challenged to complete five tests which included sausage making and a boning and butchery display.

Through grass-roots community projects, national and international competitions, and knowledge exchange, WorldSkills aims to drive skills in numerous industries.

On receiving his award John said: "It was fantastic to have been selected as one of the top six butchers in the country for the final stage of the national competition.

"The standard of butchery at the NEC was incredibly high so to come away with a silver medal is brilliant. It is always great to be given an opportunity to demonstrate your talents and encouraging to see so much young butchery talent in the UK."

Edward Berry, Managing Director at Ludlow Food Centre, said: "This is another outstanding achievement for John. We’re fortunate to have such high levels of skill available to us and I’m very proud of our butchery team as a whole.

"Many of whom have been developed through our successful apprentice scheme, under John’s expert guidance. Ludlow Food Centre’s ethos very much mirrors the aims of WorldSkills – and we have an ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of food makers.”

Ludlow Food Centre's butchery counter showcases a range of meats and charcuterie. All beef, pork, lamb and game is reared on the Earl of Plymouth Estate. John works closely with the Estate and farm managers to ensure the highest quality produce reaches the Food Centre’s customers.
