Ludlow Food Centre Takes Excellence in Tourism Gold

Excellence in tourism awards

Just 18 months after it first opened its doors to the public, the Ludlow Food Centre in Bromfield has been awarded Gold in the Heart of England Excellence in Tourism Awards’ ‘Taste of the Heart’ category for an outlet or attraction.

This farm shop with a difference beat off fierce competition from across the region and impressed the judges, from Tourism West Midlands and regional development agency Advantage West Midlands, with its unswerving passion and commitment to promoting locally produced food and drink. More than 80 per cent of the products sold in the 4000sq ft store are from the four counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Powys.

Designed to be a sustainable food attraction, the Ludlow Food Centre features eight glass-fronted production units that enable shoppers to gain a better understanding of where their food comes from, as they watch staff baking bread, boiling jam and making cheese for sale in store. There is also an adjacent café selling only homemade and local produce and the revamped Bromfield Post Office, saved from closure by landowners the Earl of Plymouth Estate.

Since opening, the Ludlow Food Centre has achieved a seven figure turnover and attracts thousands of visitors a year. It has created more than 80 jobs for local people and hundreds of valuable supply contracts for farmers, growers and producers from the Heart of England.

After the glittering ceremony at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre a delighted Sandy Boyd, Managing Director of the Food Centre, said, ‘In a short space of time we have created a unique food store that is so much more than just a great place to shop, and this is why we are fast becoming an exciting destination for visitors. The quality of our food has been recognised by our achievements at the Ludlow Food Festival, the Great Taste Awards and the World and British Cheese Awards but this is the first major accolade for the original concept and we are over the moon. I applaud the whole team for their part in making it happen and our loyal customers who have supported us from the outset.’

The Ludlow Food Centre now goes forward to the national finals of the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence, considered the tourism ‘Oscars’, in April 2009.
