Ludlow Food Festival Producer Awards 2011

Ludlow Food Festival Producer Awards 2011

To launch this year’s Ludlow Food Festival an event was held at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms on Thursday September 8th. The event saw producers from all over the region bringing their food for guests to sample, local Michelin starred chefs and members of Slow Food. The annual food festival awards ceremony also took place on the night with 12 awards up for grabs. There were 4 bread categories, 3 cake categories, a best pork pie contest, best strawberry jam, best sandwich, best non alcoholic cordial and best new product. For the first time the judging took place before the festival and an independent panel of judges decided on the winners.

Ludlow Mayor, John Aitkin, introduced the night and encouraged the crowd to support his charity of the year, Ludlow Foyer, that provides accommodation and care for young people in the town. The Mayor also presented all 12 awards to the winners. The bread category was dominated by the Ludlow Food Centre who took 3 out the 4 gold awards on offer. The remaining gold award went to Prices & Sons of Ludlow. Mother and daughter team, Anna Griffiths and Brenda Gray, run the bakery at Ludlow Food Centre with Katie Bruce and Lauren Alderson. Anna says,

‘It’s great to be recognised in these awards and we are really pleased to have done so well. We are committed to using local flour for all our breads and we have always used traditional recipes and methods’

The Food Centre’s other production kitchens won further awards with their Shropshire Strawberry Jam which took gold and their Plum Tart that took silver. Darren Marsh, head of the jam and pickle kitchen at the Centre says,

‘We only use Shropshire strawberries in this variety and we make it when the strawberries are in season to get the best flavour for the finished jam. We were really honoured to win because we knew there was a great deal of competition from other local jam makers.’
