Ludlow Food Centre Wins 3 Great Taste Awards

Great Taste Awards 2011 Winners

We have been awarded three Great Taste Awards by the Guild of Fine Food. The awards take place every year and this year saw 7400 entries from 1500 businesses. Food critics, chefs, fine food retailers, food writers and industry experts make up the 350 judges who give 1, 2 and 3 star awards to the best products in each category. The Food Centre had winning products with our beef (2 star award), marmalade (2 star award) and coffee (1 star award). Head butcher John Brereton says,

‘We rear our beef cattle in the fields surrounding the Food Centre so this award is for the butchery team but also for our stockman Elwin Morgan. Our cattle are fed on a diet that we grow and we even transport them ourselves so they don't get stressed on the 6 mile journey to Griffiths’ at Leintwardine.’

The Food Centre’s Jam and Pickle team, Darren Marsh and Tess Slater, are no strangers to winning awards for their marmalade having this year already won at the World Marmalade Festival. They were awarded a 2 star Great Taste Award for their Lady Windsor’s Marmalade. Darren says,

‘Lady Windsor gave us an old family recipe that has won awards before but we didn’t expect to get a 2 star award for it this year.’

The third award we picked up was won by Julie Hawkins for her Espresso Blend. Julie roasts coffee in one of our glass fronted kitchens that surround the shop. Julie says,

‘I have always loved coffee and volunteered to work part time in the coffee roasting room. I have been developing our espresso blend for years because it forms the basis of all the coffees we serve in our cafe. This is the first award I have won and it feels great.’
