Three Fruit Marmalade - Supreme Champion

World Champion Three Fruit Marmalade

The Ludlow Food Centre has won the top award at the World Marmalade Festival, picking up the title of ‘Supreme Champion’ for their Three Fruit variety.

Darren Marsh, Tess Slater and Pam Greenham have been making marmalade together for less than four years but have won awards at the last three World Marmalade Awards. Darren and Tess worked at Tesco in Ludlow town centre and when the Food Centre was being built they applied for a new career. They were trained to make a range of products and then encouraged to experiment with new recipes and production methods which has led them to make 5 varieties of award winning marmalade amongst other products.

Darren says,

‘I worked on the deli in Tesco and then when the position at the Food Centre came along I couldn’t is amazing to think that a few years ago I had never made marmalade and now the team and I are the world’s best...I really can’t believe it’

The festival, held at the Dalemain Mansion in Penrith, Cumbria saw over 1,100 marmalade makers from all over the world send their jars to be judged. Other winners included a team of 11 marmalade makers from Buninyong in Australia who had challenged a team from Britain to a ‘MarmalAshes’ contest, a man from the British Virgin Islands who scooped the International award and the Environment Minister, Lord Henley, who won in the Homemade Awards with his mother’s recipe. The Food Centre’s Three Fruit variety will join their Hand Cut and Lady Windsor varieties at Fortnum & Mason in London’s Piccadilly. As sponsors of the event Fortnum & Mason have agreed to stock the winning varieties from the competition and as three time winners the Food Centre now have three products listed.
