British Sausage Week 2010

British Sausage Week 2010

From November 1st to 7th the nation will be celebrating the Great British Banger. In Shropshire the Ludlow Food Centre is celebrating by adding a new type of sausage to its already long list of over 20 varieties. The Gloucester Old Spot Pork and Toffee Apple Sausage has been created by the Food Centre’s head butcher John Brereton to be a seasonally inspired treat. The new sausage is shaped like a Catherine wheel similar to a Cumberland sausage ring to emulate the popular firework. Mr Brereton says,

‘It’s amazing how popular sausages are and it’s no surprise that there is a whole week dedicated to them. Because Bonfire Night is in Sausage Week we thought it would be good to create a sausage that reminded people of the time of year ’

More than 5 million people eat a sausage every day and in just 6 months the nation eats its way through 186,210 tonnes, worth an astonishing £653.3 million. However, the Food Centre makes all its sausages using rare breed Gloucester Old Spot Pork unlike many commercially produced sausages that make up thousands of tonnes consumed each year. John also uses local ingredients such as the apples in this new Toffee Apple Sausage that are locally grown in Shropshire. He says,

‘The Food Centre sources more than 80% of its food from Shropshire and the surrounding counties and when we opened in 2007 we made a sausage with an ingredient from each of the counties to show our commitment to sourcing locally. Our ‘Four Counties Sausage’ variety has pork from our Shropshire pigs, cheese from Herefordshire, apples from Worcestershire and leeks from Powys.’

British Sausage Week is organised by the ‘British Sausage Appreciation Society’ and is supported by BPEX. This year’s event has seen ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge Craig Revel Horwood join as the ‘King of Sizzle’ to promote real sausages made by British producers. The Strictly judge will be touring the country to find the best banger in Britain. To find out more about Sausage Week go to
